Rocks Estate Vineyard rests in Walla Walla Valley’s Rocks District of Milton-Freewater, one of the strangest and most distinctive winegrowing areas in the country. Instead of topsoil soil and grass cover, vines push up through deep layers of smooth, baseball-sized basalt stones that were left behind as ancient floods tore through the Columbia Basin. The stones hold the day’s heat and give it off at night, keeping the environment warm, steady and just a little intense. These unique conditions grow smaller fruit with thick skins and loads of concentrated flavor. Savory, earthy and a little wild, wine from Rocks Estate is like a low, gritty guitar riff, unmistakable from the first note and impossible to confuse with anything else.
